Clear aligners and orthodontics in Adelaide

About clear aligners

Clear aligners are a discreet and convenient alternative to traditional braces. We use the Angel Aligner system: treatment involves wearing a series of custom-made, clear plastic aligners. Each aligner is worn for approximately two weeks, gradually shifting your teeth until the desired position is achieved as prescribed by your dentist. Before starting treatment, we’ll create a digital 3D image to show the planned progression and the final result, giving you a clear view of your new smile.

You’ll visit us every month or two to monitor your progress and receive new aligners. The average treatment time is around a year, though this may vary based on individual needs. Because the aligners are removable, you can continue to enjoy your favourite foods and maintain regular brushing and flossing to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

If you’re interested in clear aligners or fixed orthodontics and would like to find out if you’re a suitable candidate, please call us on 08 8387 1733 to arrange a consultation. Our team is here to guide you through your orthodontic journey and help you achieve the smile you’ve always wanted.

How do clear aligners work?

Clear aligner treatment uses a series of thin, clear plastic aligners. These aligners are manufactured for the individual patient and are based on a scan taken at the beginning of treatment, which allows the orthodontist to map out the specific treatment plan.

The patient changes the aligners to the next set in the series every 2 weeks and this is what creates the movement. The teeth gently move into their desired place at each stage of the treatment.

Why choose clear aligners?

Unlike traditional braces that apply force to the teeth using metal brackets and wires, clear aligners are made of a thin, clear plastic, creating four main benefits:

  • Clear aligners are cosmetically pleasing.
  • Clear aligners are more hygienic than traditional metal braces. They can be removed when eating, brushing and flossing so they make it much easier to maintain good oral hygiene during treatment.
  • Clear aligners are more comfortable than traditional metal braces. They are made of clear, thin plastic, rather than metal and wires, this means that it’s not as likely for your gums and mouth to suffer ulcers or abrasions from rubbing against the appliance.
  • Clear aligner treatment equals less orthodontic appointments. Aligners don’t require adjustments like traditional metal braces do, so therefore you are required to visit our surgery less frequently.

Using and caring for your aligners

  • Aligners must be worn 22 out of the 24 hours a day. You may remove only for eating, brushing and flossing.
  • Cleaning of the Aligners involves brushing with your toothbrush and the occasional soak in a cleaning solution such as Sterident.
  • The removable Aligners can be easily lost, so if you are not wearing them, be sure to keep them safe in the container provided.
  • If you lose or break your Aligner, please contact us immediately so that arrangements can be made for a replacement.
  • There can be a natural tendency for teeth for move so on completion of treatment the final retainers need to be worn nightly on an ongoing basis.

frequently asked teeth straightening questions

Below our the questions and answers we get asked the most about teeth straitening in our Adelaide dental clinic.

How do clear aligners work compared to fixed orthodontics?

Clear aligners

Clear aligner treatment uses a series of custom-made, clear aligners that gradually shift your teeth into place. These aligners are removable and nearly invisible, making them a discreet option.

Fixed Orthodontics

Fixed orthodontics involves the use of bands, brackets, and wires that are permanently attached to the teeth for the duration of the treatment. These components work together to apply constant pressure, moving the teeth into the desired position.

Which option is more effective for straightening teeth, clear aligners or fixed braces?

Both clear aligners and fixed braces are effective for straightening teeth, but the best option depends on the specific case. Fixed braces are typically more suitable for complex orthodontic issues, while clear aligners are effective for mild to moderate misalignments. A consultation with an orthodontist can determine the best treatment for your needs.

How long does treatment take with clear aligners versus fixed braces?

Clear aligners

The average treatment time for clear aligners is 12 to 18 months, though this can vary based on the complexity of the case.

Fixed Braces

Treatment with fixed braces typically takes 18 to 24 months. However, some cases may be shorter or longer depending on the individual’s orthodontic needs.

What are the advantages of clear aligners over fixed braces?

Clear aligners

The main advantages of clear aligners include being nearly invisible, removable (allowing for easier eating and cleaning), and generally more comfortable due to the lack of metal components.

Fixed Braces

Fixed braces are permanently attached, meaning they are working 24/7 and don’t require patient compliance. They are also typically better suited for complex orthodontic issues.

Are there any dietary restrictions with clear aligners or fixed braces?

Clear aligners

There are no dietary restrictions with clear aligners, as the aligners are removed during meals. This allows you to eat and drink anything you like, as long as you brush your teeth before reinserting the aligners.

Fixed Braces

With fixed braces, there are certain dietary restrictions to avoid damaging the braces. Hard, sticky, or chewy foods should be avoided as they can break the brackets and wires, prolonging the treatment time.
